Central Bank Mortgage Rules Should Look at Rent Payments – Lawless

James Lawless Fianna FailCllr James Lawless has backed calls that the Central Bank rules on mortgage lending, in place since February of last year, need to be reviewed to examine the impact they are having on the ability of young couples and individuals to purchase their first home. In particular, he is calling for the rules to be modified in order that an established track record of paying rent is taken as evidence of ability to service a mortgage.

A survey carried out by Daft.ie last September found that it was cheaper to buy rather than to rent in 43 out of 54 areas covered by the survey. This means that, in up to 80% of the country, individuals and couples would actually be financially better off on a monthly basis paying a mortgage than paying rent for an equivalent property.

Power Calls on FG TD to Clarify Position on LEADER Funding

Cllr. Robert Power

Cllr. Robert Power

Cllr Rob Power has questioned whether Fine Gael backbench TD Anthony Lawlor is actually aware of what’s going on in rural Kildare. Cllr Power has accused Kildare North TD Anthony Lawlor of being “either ignorant to the situation in rural Kildare or allowing his standards as a government backbencher to slip”. The comments come after Deputy Lawlor issued a press release “welcoming €5.26 million LEADER funding for Kildare”.

“What Deputy Lawlor doesn’t seem to realise is that €5.3m represents the lowest amount of funding for any county in the country.” Kildare County Council have written to the Department of Environment asking for clarity on why the amount allocated to the county is so low. Cllr Power added, “I find it amazing that a county such as Kildare with a large rural population would be at the bottom of the list nationally for LEADER funding. Even more amazing is how any politician could “welcome” such a decision for their own county”.
