In March 2015, Cllr James Lawless was selected by the Kildare North Fianna Fáil organisation to represent the party at the forthcoming general election. James is a member of Kildare County Council representing the Naas Area which encompasses Naas, Sallins, Kill, Johnstown, Caragh, Kilteel, Eadestown, Ballymore, Two Mile House, and Kilcullen. He was elected to the council for the first time in May 2014 securing the biggest vote in Kildare and the second highest Fianna Fáil election quota in Ireland during those local elections.
A resident of Sallins, James is originally from County Wexford and lived in Dublin before moving to Kildare to settle and make a home for himself and his family.
James studied Maths and Finance at Trinity (B.A., M.Sc.) and worked in I.T. before more recently training as a Barrister (B.L.). James has a strong academic background and was awarded scholarships at Trinity College as well as Kings Inns School of Law. He currently works in the area of financial regulation including data protection and corporate governance.
In the local area James has campaigned for more community policing and has helped communities including Kill, Kilteel and Ballymore Eustace deal with the aftermath of Garda station closures by setting up alert systems and Garda clinics. James has campaigned within Sallins for more facilities and the much needed bypass. Within Naas town James is an advocate for a revitalization of the town centre and has proposals to address parking issues, rates and other current difficulties. He has been very active in campaigning for unfinished estates to be taken in charge and has successfully progressed this recently for a number of local estates. As a daily commuter himself, James is also a long standing campaigner for the Naas and Sallins Rail Users Group and has worked to improve the services on that line.
James has been active politically since university when he was involved in students union campaigns. James is a member of Sallins Cumann and secretary of Naas Area Fianna Fáil. and was elected a member of the Fianna Fáil National Executive at the 2012 Ard Fheis and re-elected at the 2013 Ard Fheis. In his (limited!) spare time James enjoys jogging, fishing or exploring the great outdoors with his children and their dogs. James is a keen follower of Gaelic games and is PRO of Sallins GAA.
