Tribute from FF Leader on Death of Former Kildare TD Paddy Power

Fianna Fáil Leader Micheál Martin has expressed his condolences on the death of former Kildare TD Paddy Power who passed away on 14 August 2013.

“It was with great sadness that I learned of the passing of former Fianna Fáil TD Paddy Power. He served the people of Kildare with distinction in the Dáil for 20 years and also served as a member of the European Parliament in the late seventies before his son Sean took up that mantle and continued that tradition of public service.”

“Paddy was a very astute politician and was appointed a Minister on three separate occasions. He had a long and successful career in politics and represented the people of Kildare very well over that time. On behalf of myself and the Fianna Fáil party I would like to extend my sympathies to Paddy’s wife Kitty and their ten children. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.”

Micheál Martin TD speaking at FF’s BBQ event in Leixlip.

At a recent party event in Leixlip, Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin TD slammed the Government’s proposal to abolish the Seanad. This comes after the abolition of all town councils across the country. “They are dismantling our democracy piece by piece and dressing it up as reform” stated Martin.

The party event which took place in the Courtyard Hotel in Leixlip on 6th June was attended by over 200 party members. Martin spent the day in the area meeting the the organisation’s local reps and going on the doors in the local community. Martin referenced two previous anti-democratic measures already introduced by this Government: the removal of elections to Údarás na Gaeltachta and the recent winding up of all town councils. “This new move to abolish the Seanad is populist and doesn’t represent real reform.”
